One needs to ensure the length of wall doesn’t get too long and take the frog away from weightbearing. At no point should the foal or grown horse be sore after trimming. It is important for the health of the hooves that horses are not shod too young. Even if you are ultimately going to be shoeing your horse for performance, shoeing should be delayed until the caudal (back of the hoof) has developed, this may be 5 years old or even later.
